By far the crappiest field for a July since I was introduced to this game 30 years ago. I will keep my money thank you

1 Legal Council - Highlight runner up in MET. Big weight
2 Gladitorian - 6 year old no form further than 1800. Maybe aiming at the 1800 grade 1 end July Big Weight
3 King Pelles - top stayer, very good 2026 form. Not great at Grade 1 level.
4 Star Major Highest rated 3 year old left. Looks to have very good chance to win this.
5 Choisinada - Top handicapper never been to KZN. Last run was a very good 2nd over 2000m
6 Native Ruler - strange 2 point merit rating decrease after the 1900 behind Isivivane. DeMelo rides
7 Happy Verse - very good run in the Daily news. 1.5 kg weight turn around with star major. No Jockey declared
8 Holding Thumbs - top stayer. optimistic entry
9 Note to self. - top run in Daily News weight turn around with 1st and 2nd place runners. Fourie rides
10 Mocha Blend - shock Summer Cup winner. not to much to be positive about. Not for me
11 The Ultimate King - saw greyville in the 1900. last two runs decent enough. Place chance if travels well
12 Hazy Dazy - so disappointing in the daily news. Deserves her place.
13 Wish List - Handicappers golden child. Pace was muddled in the Woolhavington. Must go very close. off 117 rating.
14 Shoot the rapids - descent stayer optimistic entry
15 Minogue - lovely form leading into the July. Does she go for the Harden Province or the July. Big Chance
16 Chronicle King - would be great to see Oscar have a runner. 2200 meters a concern
17 Olivias way - consistent form. 1st trip to Greyville. must have a place chance
18 Vivas Liberte- good 4th in the Daily news. Dark Horse
19 I salute u - good runs to Zeitz and Okavango over 1800. does it see out 2200. Not for me
20 Enflame - champ 2026 stayer. not for me
21 Field Marshall - nice horse outclassed here
22 Aladdin's Lamp won the Jubilee. would not consider except for MDK factor.
23 Zeitz - Plattner racing have struggled at grade 1 level in recent years. Does he stay 2200
24 Copper Eagle - 1 time winner???
25 Isivivane - lovely win in the 1900. must have a chance 2200 meters?
26 Regulation - Pace maker for snaith??
27 Ten Penny - give up now
28 La Pulga - beaten by ten penny
29 Curious Girl - SA Derby winner. average run in the lonsdale. out at weight if MR to be believed. MDK factor if it runs

By David Thiselton

KZN’s reigning champion trainer Gareth van Zyl has announced the rider for his Hollywoodbets Durban July Gr 1 contender KING PELLES and it will add further international flavour to the big race.

Chad Schofield will join his cousin Zac Lloyd as a rider in the big race with Zac having been announced earlier this week as the rider for the Justin Snaith-trained HAPPY VERSE.

One factor which will give him an advantage over Zac is he has ridden in the Hollywoodbets Durban July before, partnering The Conglomerate in 2015 and finding himself stuck behind a wall of horses when trying to find a path down the outside.

He will have that in mind when planning his race this time.

Both jockeys are the sons of world class former Durbanite jockeys who married the daughters of former trainer Aubrey Roberts.

Chad is the son of Glyn Schofield, while Zac is the son of the legendary Jeff Lloyd.

Glyn was not considered a top echelon jockey until the early years of this millennium when returning from overseas, which included a stint riding in Hong Kong.

It soon became apparent he was outriding everybody in the country with his fine hands and quite incredible judgement of pace. He became one of the most sort after jockeys in South Africa, but went on to become, like Jeff, a highly sort after jockey in Australia, where he rode 18 Gr 1 winners.

Chad rose to prominence after winning Australia’s greatest weight for age race, the Cox Plate, in 2013 on maiden Shamus Award.

He then followed in his father’s footsteps by riding in Hong Kong, where he had 208 wins in a seven year stint.

He continued to be a sort after jockey when returning to Australia and has had nine Gr 1 wins in his career.

Gareth was left without a jockey when Gavin Lerena jumped ship from KING PELLES on to MINOQUE, but this paved the way for further international presence in the big race.

I agree this is an average field; I for one do not hold the 3yr-olds in such a high regard, but you never know; runners that for me have chances at the odds are Native Ruler and The Ultimate King

13 Jockeys declared

Regulation should not qualify unless 9 others scratch. So JP may need another ride.
Was surprised to see Veale jump off Gladitorian for Isivivane.

Michel should ride star Major
Muzi no ride yet. Maybe Curious Girl
Trent Mayhew on Hazy Dazy??

Veale has to ride Hollywood horse.

I think he has a place chance so I don't think Ferrie will struggle to get a jock.

I would personally like to see Rachel ride this guy .
Hold up horse with quick turn of foot will suit her riding style.

Having the champion jockey elect riding a 25/1 must surely make Viva Libertas value at the price
