Missile streaks to success

Malmesbury Missile must love the Greyville circuit. He showed good form there as a juvenile and got his 3YO KZN Winter campaign underway with a career top speed figure of 101 in the Byerley Turk on Friday night.
Trained by Justin Snaith, the son of Gimmethegreeenlight ex Gabor, finished too strongly for I’m A Fireball s/s 99. In so doing, he put two tame runs in the Cape behind him and showed that he is back on course for feature prizes in Durban.
The Umzimkhulu Stakes went to the Dean Kannemeyer trained Keukenhof s/s 94 ++ who outran Snaith’s, Gimme What I Want. The winner had been stiff at a few starts and got her just reward this time round, quickening past the runner up in a false run affair led initially by Quickstepgal who faded to third and was reportedly in season.
The Specialist s/s 97 defeated Lead the Charge s/s 96 to earn the top figure at the Vaal on Saturday. In so doing he completed a hat-trick. Sean Tarry trains and Keagan de Melo rides. The in-form, son of The United States seems poised to make another breakthrough and run even higher numbers.
Other notable scores were attained by Mark Khan’s Fiery Rose s/s 96 + who streaked clear of Precocious s/s 92 in a sprint; whilst convincing winner, Mrs Stormiatrix s/s 90 doubled up for Tony Peter in the last.
Bio: Mark van Deventer has been refining his speed figures for thoroughbred racehorses over three decades. A full-time racing journalist since 2013, he’s known for his integrity and imaginative handicapping, adapting the principles of Andrew Beyer’s figures to South African racecourses.
